About Buxton

Buxton lies on the western fringe of the Peak District, just outside the boundary of the National Park on account of the quarrying thereabouts. There are many literary links to Derbyshire and the Peak District - Jane Austin, George Eliot, D. H Lawrence and even the French philosopher Rousseau. John Ruskin, regarded in his lifetime as being the leading cultural writer of the epoch, frequently stayed at Matlock Bath and travelling the Peak District extensively. The building of the Midland Railway line between Bakewell and Buxton outraged the man - "There was a rocky valley between Buxton and Bakewell, once upon a time, divine as the Vale of Tempe...You Enterprised a Railroad through the valley - you blasted its rocks away, heaped thousands of tons of shale into its lovely stream. The valley is gone, and the Gods with it; and now, every fool in Buxton can be in Bakewell in half an hour, and every fool in Bakewell at Buxton".
