The county town of Shropshire, Shrewsbury, may have been founded by the Romans but there are no Roman remains, just a few finds around and about.

The first written account that mentions Shrewsbury comes from the 10th century, when it is called a city. It was certainly an important border post and was fortified as Shrewsbury coinage was being minted. During the 11th century, Shrewsbury became the county town of Shropshire. Shrewsbury Castle sits on a hill that forms the centre of the town, in a meander of the river Severn. The Castle dates from the 13th century. In the town itself, there are many half timbered houses, as you will see on your treasure hunt, are very well preserved indeed.

During the English Civil War, Shrewsbury was a royalist stronghold but fell to the Parliamentary forces after a traitor opened St Mary's Water Gate (known since then as traitor's gate). It was only in the late middle ages that Shrewsbury reached its height of prosperity through the wool trade, not surprising given the rural character of Shropshire. The industrial revolution largely passed Shrewsbury by, there being only one mill of any note, however, in the 19th century, it became an important railway town.

But the bloodiest of English battles took place just to the north, the Battle of Shrewsbury in 1403 reputedly saw the deaths of around 6000 soldiers in just 3 hours. Continuing on the macarbre theme, the Cross at the centre of town was the scene for many executions, you can find a plaque, replica cross and a list of the executions on the wall of a building close to the location of the original cross.

Since there was a lack of heavy industry, the town avoided any bombing during the second world war, hence the preservation of the half timbered buildings, however, during the Cold War, the now disbanded Royal Observer Corps were stationed here, complete with their nuclear bunker!

Probably the most famous person born in Shrewsbury was Charles Darwin, the biologist who caused so much controversy with his 'Origin of Species'.
